I have been running tests on the use of Pop-Unders to promote several types of products and services. Note that I am discussing POP-UNDER’S… not Pop-UP’s. I consider Pop-Up’s too intrusive. Pop-Under’s on the other hand load in the background when visiting a site and, therefore, are not perceived in the same way as the much more intrusive Pop-Up.

To source vendors of Pop-Under advertising go to Google and search on “Pop Under Advertising”. You will find dozens of vendors selling Pop-Under traffic packages.

Here are ten points to consider…

1. Buying Pop-Unders is like running a gauntlet… there are many providers… but few of real quality. I have purchased a few Pop-Under campaigns that produced less than 50 views a day… hardly what I had been promoted. Consistency of delivery has been dismal.

2. Only use Pop-Unders to promote something that has universal appeal. You have little or no control of who views your page… so make sure that the product or service offered is potentially appealing to almost every person who views the page.

3. Pop-Unders are a teaser and lead generation tool… not a direct sales vehicle. Make a solid free offer with compelling benefits to draw the viewer to your site to complete the selling cycle. Never direct your Pop-Under traffic to your home page… design a custom offer page (or pages) specifically for your Pop-Under traffic. Pull out all the stops to make this a hard hitting offer page. Keep it simple. Test various headlines for pulling-power. Note: Most Pop-Under traffic providers will not allow your served page to contain sound files or other pop-up’s or pop-under’s.

4. Pop-Unders seem to work well for “business opportunity” offers that feature a “home-based business”… and as subscriber recruitment vehicles for newsletters, discussion lists, etc. Remember the “universal appeal” caveat… the newsletter or discussion list needs to be broadly appealing.

5. Be careful that the Pop-Under vendor does not use “adult” type sites to present your ad. If they don’t address this issue in their sales copy… send them an email and make them confirm in writing that your ad will only be viewed by non-adult sites.

6. Buy no more than 10,000 Pop-Unders on your first purchase from any one vendor. Test and measure the campaign. If it looks promising on the first 10,000 then test another 10,000. If that test is favorable then jump up to 20,000 or 25,000 and test again. Don’t fall in the trap of buying 100,000 or 1,000,000 hits upfront… no matter what the price.

7. Some vendors offer “targeting”, to specific categories of traffic, at a premium price. Test this option the same way as described above to see if they are worth the premium price. Some are… some are not. If, for example, you are promoting a health care business opportunity, you may find that buying the traffic targeted at “health” or “opportunity seekers” is a better return on investment… maybe not. Again, always test in smaller numbers and ramp-up based on measurable results.

8. Ad tracking is a real plus when using Pop-Under campaigns. It is worth the money to implement ad-tracking software, or web based ad tracking services, when testing these types of traffic providers. This is true of almost any direct marketing effort but especially when you are being delivered raw traffic counts that can result in thousands of views per day.

9. Pricing runs all over the map… some vendors will sell you full page views of your website for as little as $29.00 for 10,000… others will price that same 10,000 at $89.00. There are lot’s of resellers in the business and that probably accounts for the wide price swings. The lower priced vendors are often the ones who are selling adult-site originated traffic.

10. If you have tested Pop-Unders for your specific offers and found them cost effective… you are in nirvana. You can then roll out to large buys from prime vendors for millions of hits for only fractions of a penny apiece.

After you have tested and refined your lead generation message … and it is working cost effectively… you will have discovered a completely duplicatable lead generation tool to drive qualified traffic to your lead capture page of your web sites. This lead generation system can then be taught to your distributors which will result in literally thousands upon thousands of leads working throughout your marketing organization.

It’s a marketing dream come true: A potential customer, looking for what you have to offer, types a few words into her favorite search engine and voila! She is led directly to your website where she can go from "prospect" to "customer."

The best part is, it didn’t cost you anything (except time and elbow grease) to get to the top of her results. Unless, of course you paid for someone else’s time and elbow grease. Even so, you’ve got a sale and your customer got what she was looking for. Sounds like the classic win-win situation.

So, what’s not to love about Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Plenty ? if your efforts stop there. Because getting your site to the top of the search result heap is only half the battle. Leave the other half un-fought, and you’re actually doing yourself more harm than good.

Lets not forget that the ultimate goal of this whole exercise is to eventually make sales. And last I checked, search engine spiders weren’t spending a whole lot of money.

When an actual human being gets to your site and sees a page designed for a robot she feels a bit used. Kind of like being pitched to by the used car salesman in the polyester suit. She reads copy that, rather than telling her how she might benefit from what you have to offer, repeats variations of her search term over and over. This tells her you don’t care about her, you only want her money. She clicks away and searches some more.

This hurts you in at least three ways:

1. You lose the sale. So you don’t make any money.

2. She still visited, as did everyone else sucked in by your high placement. Depending on your hosting arrangement, you could be paying for more traffic. So you may actually lose money.

3. Most importantly, your prospect now has a negative impression of you. Even if you clean up your act she’s less likely to ever click on your link again. It’s called negative branding and, you guessed it: It causes you to lose money.

It also has the potential of hurting you even more in the future, as search engine spiders are getting smarter every day. Not only do they eventually catch on if you mindlessly repeat phrases to trick them, they also notice if searchers are always coming back to the results in a hurry because you weren’t what they were looking for. If that is the case, they won’t continue to recommend you so highly.

It takes more time and more effort to develop content that is both human and spider friendly. But not doing so can actually do you more harm than good.

I don’t claim to be a futurologist or an RSS pioneer but I have been keeping a pretty close eye on RSS and how it has been evolving. From what I have seen so far I think I can make some pretty good predictions about where RSS feeds are heading.

The first prediction is pretty obvious but I think it needs to said. RSS feeds are here to stay and they are only going to become more popular. This year we have seen the likes of Yahoo pretty much integrate RSS into its search and Microsoft will integrate RSS reading into it new browser and make RSS a part of the next version of Windows. It won’t be long before RSS Google search appears.

RSS feeds will see richer content becoming more common. We already have inclusions in RSS 2.0 that are used for pictures and more frequently podcasts. I think we will see an increase in video in RSS feeds although due to the bandwidth needed I think many inclusions will be in the form of torrents. That’s right you heard it here first, RSS readers with integrated support for torrents.

There will be more and more service based RSS feeds such as RSS weather and the delivery of lottery results, sports results and other results reporting RSS services. This is because RSS feeds are downloaded to your RSS reader and sit there ready for you to read them, you never have to miss the sports results again.

News in RSS feeds will continue to be big especially in niche areas where there isn’t as much coverage as there is for the mainstream news such as Yahoo news and BBC news. There will be more smarter services that will be able to mix you RSS feeds taste so you get exactly the sort of news you like to read about.

My final prediction will be that of how we consume RSS feeds. At the moment there are many RSS readers you can choose from, this will change very soon. I predict there will be only a couple of major RSS readers that will emerge, pretty much like how we now only have two main web browsers. I however wouldn’t like to say whether Microsoft and Mozilla will be the two to emerge as dominant, the field is still too new.

Not is all lost for the other players in the RSS reader market. I see agrowth in the number of custom readers in the form of widgets. Widgets are small lightweight apps that run specific task such as displaying the weathers but in a pretty GUI environment. We will see more widgets that take RSS feeds and translate them into graphical representations, a good example of his would be a weather widget. The weather widget would get data from an RSS feed containing weather data and represent this in a graphical format on your screen.

The future truly is bright for RSS and will continue to compliment its older and more mature HTML cousin. Now I wonder if anyone has thought about creating a racing tips RSS feed.

You can find out more about RSS at Newsniche and how it can help you.

by: Karen Martin

Analyzing your web traffic statistics can be an invaluable tool for a number of different reasons. But before you can make full use of this tool, you need to understand how to interpret the data.

Most web hosting companies will provide you with basic web traffic information that you then have to interpret and make pertinent use of. However, the data you receive from your host company can be overwhelming if you don’t understand how to apply it to your particular business and website. Let’s start by examining the most basic data - the average visitors to your site on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

These figures are the most accurate measure of your website’s activity. It would appear on the surface that the more traffic you see recorded, the better you can assume your website is doing, but this is an inaccurate perception. You must also look at the behavior of your visitors once they come to your website to accurately gauge the effectiveness of your site.

There is often a great misconception about what is commonly known as “hits” and what is really effective, quality traffic to your site. Hits simply means the number of information requests received by the server. If you think about the fact that a hit can simply equate to the number of graphics per page, you will get an idea of how overblown the concept of hits can be. For example, if your homepage has 15 graphics on it, the server records this as 15 hits, when in reality we are talking about a single visitor checking out a single page on your site. As you can see, hits are not useful in analyzing your website traffic.

The more visitors that come to your website, the more accurate your interpretation will become. The greater the traffic is to your website, the more precise your analysis will be of overall trends in visitor behavior. The smaller the number of visitors, the more a few anomalous visitors can distort the analysis.

The aim is to use the web traffic statistics to figure out how well or how poorly your site is working for your visitors. One way to determine this is to find out how long on average your visitors spend on your site. If the time spent is relatively brief, it usually indicates an underlying problem. Then the challenge is to figure out what that problem is.

It could be that your keywords are directing the wrong type of visitors to your website, or that your graphics are confusing or intimidating, causing the visitor to exit rapidly. Use the knowledge of how much time visitors are spending on your site to pinpoint specific problems, and after you fix those problems, continue to use time spent as a gauge of how effective your fix has been.

Additionally, web traffic stats can help you determine effective and ineffective areas of your website. If you have a page that you believe is important, but visitors are exiting it rapidly, that page needs attention. You could, for example, consider improving the link to this page by making the link more noticeable and enticing, or you could improve the look of the page or the ease that your visitors can access the necessary information on that page.

If, on the other hand, you notice that visitors are spending a lot of time on pages that you think are less important, you might consider moving some of your sales copy and marketing focus to that particular page.

As you can see, these statistics will reveal vital information about the effectiveness of individual pages, and visitor habits and motivation. This is essential information to any successful Internet marketing campaign.

Your website undoubtedly has exit pages, such as a final order or contact form. This is a page you can expect your visitor to exit rapidly. However, not every visitor to your site is going to find exactly what he or she is looking for, so statistics may show you a number of different exit pages. This is normal unless you notice a exit trend on a particular page that is not intended as an exit page. In the case that a significant percentage of visitors are exiting your website on a page not designed for that purpose, you must closely examine that particular page to discern what the problem is. Once you pinpoint potential weaknesses on that page, minor modifications in content or graphic may have a significant impact on the keeping visitors moving through your site instead of exiting at the wrong page.

After you have analyzed your visitor statistics, it’s time to turn to your keywords and phrases. Notice if particular keywords are directing a specific type of visitor to your site. The more targeted the visitor - meaning that they find what they are looking for on your site, and even better, fill out your contact form or make a purchase - the more valuable that keyword is.

However, if you find a large number of visitors are being directed - or should I say misdirected - to your site by a particular keyword or phrase, that keyword demands adjustment. Keywords are vital to bringing quality visitors to your site who are ready to do business with you. Close analysis of the keywords your visitors are using to find your site will give you a vital understanding of your visitor’s needs and motivations.

Finally, if you notice that users are finding your website by typing in your company name, break open the champagne! It means you have achieved a significant level of brand recognition, and this is a sure sign of burgeoning success.

Let’s face it, most of us know the basics of Internet Marketing or how to promote websites and products on the Internet. There are plenty of ebooks on the subject if you aren’t familiar. In this article however, I want to give you 9 juicy secrets that I have discovered from my own Internet marketing experience.

These Internet marketing secrets are not a replacement of the basics of website promotion. You will want to use these 9 tips in addition to pay per click advertising, having an affiliate program for your website, offering a free newsletter, and search engine marketing.

Use these website promotion tips below and success will surely follow.

1. Add a valuable resource to your website that will attract your target market. A great example of this is my website GameSecretsExposed.com . My target market is people who play xbox, ps2, and gamecube video games. When I added a free game codes section I was able to attract more video gamers from the search engines. This technique not only gave me loads of traffic but it also kept people coming back to my website. The same could work for you by adding an article directory to your website or some sort of free tutorials pertaining to the market that you want to reach.

2. Write articles pertaining to the subject of your website or product and post them to various online article directories. This not only means that you will get hundreds of websites linking back to yours but you will also get the benefit of free traffic, a higher search engine ranking for various key terms, and more opportunities for people wanting to join your affiliate program.

3. Write an ebook and give it away with resale rights and or giveaway rights. Encourage your customers or newsletter subscribers to sell or give an ebook away with their own branded affiliate link to your website. Use this Internet marketing technique and your ebooks will eventually get passed around thousands of times.

4. Give out a website toolbar or piece of software that is a valuable resource to your website visitors. You can get a programmer to design a toolbar for your website or buy a toolbar creator program. Make the toolbar easy to update so that you can notify people of new resources or newsletter updates for your website. This one idea gives me 100s of repeat visitors a month.

5. Add a forum to your website. Create sections for topics that your visitors are interested in discussing. This will encourage repeat website visitors. Forums are also a great source for producing free content for your website which search engines love.

6. Go to PrWeb.com and write a simple Press Release describing the benefits of your website. When you write your Press release be sure to add relevant keywords in the title and body of the article. If your press release is properly optimized for search engines, you could get ranked high for various key terms. You may even attract news organizations who will want to publish an article on your website.

7. Contact news reporters to run a news story or review of your website or product. I got lucky a year ago when a reporter from the Universal Press Syndicate did a review on my GameSecretsExposed.com ebook. The review was a great source of web site traffic and brand awareness.

8. Get free viral traffic from ebay. Use tip #3 in this article and sell your ebooks with resale rights on Ebay. Make sure that you have links to your website included in the ebook. Eventually, you will get hundreds of other ebay sellers promoting your website for you.

9. Start a Blog. Go to Blogger.com or Blogspot.com and open a free account. List the blog for free at my.yahoo.com. Post your articles to your blog and encourage your website visitors to subscribe and read the latest news regarding your websites topic. This helps to attract the search engines and gets you repeat visitors to your website.

And there you have it. Use these 9 secrets and you will kick your Internet marketing efforts into overdrive.

When you now organize a street interview and ask people “What is Google”, I assume more than 90 percent of the people answer that Google is a search engine. Indeed, Google is a search engine and it is probably its core business, but Google is much more!

A short overview of the main services of Google:

++ Category One : Google Web Search Features ++

- Besides the traditional Google search engines in different languages, there is also a local search engine available: Google Local. As Google Local is in beta, only US searches are possible. Are you living in Detroit and hungry and you want a taco, do a search on http://local.google.com and you get a list of all taco restaurants.

- Google Mobile : search with your cell phone online information

by: Karen Martin

Search engines are the gateway to the Internet; they are the first tool that potential customers use to find the products and services they need. This is why link popularity is so imperative. If the customers do not find your website, you have no possibilities of making any sales.

You’re probably wondering what the blazes is popular about a link! Well, in a word - plenty! Link popularity refers to the ranking assigned to your website by the search engines, and it determines the ranking your page gets when keywords are entered into a search engine. So, you’re probably wondering, how do I make my link popular?

Search engines are discretionary, giving status and ranking to sites that have links to their pages from related, quality sites. It’s a simple formula, but a very important one. Google created the system, and now virtually all the most popular search engines employ it to rank your web pages in their indexes.

The more commonly used your keyword is, the harder it will be to achieve link popularity, but without achieving this step, it is almost certain your site will never rank highly on any search engine. But don’t be discouraged; there are tried and true ways of achieving link popularity using the most competitive keywords.

There are a few things you should be aware of. The first is that just linking up with a large number of other websites will not achieve link popularity. In fact, it may have quite the opposite effect. This is particularly true when pertaining to websites that are nothing more than “link farms” - pages containing line after line of indiscriminate links. Search engines may aggressively discriminate against your website if you are associated with a link farm, so steer clear of them!

The next thing to bear in mind is the quality of the site you are linking to. Never link to a page you have reservations about your visitors seeing. The last thing you want your website to appear as is indiscriminate and cheap. Linking to sites of poor quality will only lessen your link popularity, if not completely destroy it.

So let’s get to what you need to do to achieve supreme link popularity and improve your rankings to stellar status on all the popular search engines.

The first step, and the fastest way to get your foot in the door, is to get a listing in a popular directory, such as Open Directory Project and Yahoo. If your site is business-related, you will want to be listed on Yahoo, and despite the fact that it will cost you around $300 a year, it will be money well spent. If your site is non-commercial, the listing will be free, but it will take time and follow-up to actually get it listed. Open Directory is gives you a free listing whether you are business-related or non-commercial, but be prepared to make a lot of follow-up inquiries before you see your site listed.

You are aiming to get listed in the highest level of appropriate category, and this just takes some common sense. For example, if your company ships Alpaca wool from an Alpaca farm located in the middle of Nowhere, Tiny State, do NOT submit your listing to “Retailers from Nowhere, Tiny State.” BIG MISTAKE! All you have to do is look a little deeper - and submit your listing to the “Fine Alpaca Wool” category. You will not only associate yourself with culture and quality, but you will be listed in a national category.

The next step after you have attained directory listings is to locate other quality sites that will increase your link popularity. Try to find sites that are in some way related to yours, so not only will your link popularity increase, but your customer base may also be expanded. You want to avoid your competitors and look for sites that are useful to your site’s visitors. Let’s look at the Alpaca Wool site example. Linking up to a site that sells knitting supplies would be helpful to your visitors, and the chances of the knitting supply site wanting to link up to your site are also greater. By linking to a related site that will be relevant to your website’s traffic, you are increasing both of your site’s business prospects - and both of your sites’ link popularity.

Not all sites want to link to other sites, so you will have to do some research when you are looking for possible linking partners. Google is an excellent starting place for your search. Make sure you enter keywords that you think quality customers will also enter to find your own site. Remember, your criteria are quality, highly ranked, non-competing websites that have a links or resources page. Go to these sites and objectively assess them. Look at the quality of the product, the graphics, and the ease of use. Then check out the other sites they are linked to, and determine if your own site would fit in with the crowd.

When you decide you have found a good prospect, you must set out to woo them. The first thing to do is to add a link on your own links page to their site. This is an essential first step; it shows good faith, and ups your chances significantly of their reciprocity. After you have added their link, you must contact the webmaster of their site. Since this is almost always done by email, you want to make sure it is immediately clear that your message is not junk mail. This requires that you tell them right off the bat that you have added a link to their page on your site. A hook like this almost always insures the reader will read on.

Next, be sure to be flattering and let them know how much you appreciate their website. Make sure you emphasize that you have actually visited their site, and that their site is not just a random pick. Give them the address of your links page, and ask them to check out the link for themselves. It’s a good idea to mention that they will not only benefit from the increased traffic your website will direct their way, but you will also increase their link popularity. Briefly, explain why link popularity is so essential, but do this in a sentence or two so you don’t sound like a professor! Finally, tell them you would greatly appreciate if they would reciprocally add a link on their own links page to your website.

Go through this process with as many appropriate sites as you can find, bearing in mind the criteria of quality and non-competitiveness. After you have emailed all relevant sites, be sure to check these website frequently to see if they have added a link to your page. Give it about a month, and if no link appears, try another charming email. Then give it another month, and if your site is still absent from their links page, it’s time to remove their link from your own links page. The only time you want to pursue a link further than this is if you believe a site is crucial to your link popularity and your business needs. Just remember to keep all your communications complimentary and cordial.

Then set up a schedule to check your ranking in search engines frequently to see if your link popularity has improved. This is not achievable in the blink of an eye. It will take some time and a good deal of work. There is no way around the labor-intensive quality of improving your link popularity, which is why search engines regard it with such importance.

By the way - make sure you have a beautiful, streamlined site or you will never persuade anyone to link up to you. Be prepared to keep plugging away at this process, as long as it takes, until you achieve link popularity stardom!

Beware of Internet Consultants, as many of them have never been able to promote anything of their own, yet are in a haste to charge you for their experience and marketing savvy. Many have never made any money on this Internet, sold anything or consulted with any successful online sales companies. In fact most often these folks hold themselves out to be experts and consultants yet have no real experience at all. The Former President and Founder of Wendy’s Hamburger, Dave Thomas, when listening to those trying to give him advice would often ask, how much money do you have? Often finding that those wishing to give him advice had little if any money, he would think to himself; "why should I listen to you?" Indeed this is a good question.

As an entrepreneur I often have people holding themselves out to be consultants attempt to sell me their advice. Yet on further review they have nothing to offer. In my observations of the online Internet Sales business there are many who are trying to consult, yet so do well. If someone is really a good consultant then in fact they would be doing it for themselves. It is similar to the saying; Those who can’t Teach or those who can’t work for the government. Indeed, if you will look at all the experts out there who claim to be Internet Guru’s ask yourself how many really have made any money on the Internet? Only a few, in fact most Internet Consultants will give you advice of search engine registration, market and sales techniques, but fall down in their own efforts to market their consulting business. In fact most Internet Consultants rank very low in the search engines and most a starving and living on minimal means. So why on Earth would you hire one without proof of performance; one way for them to prove they are good at what they do, would be that they did well in promoting themselves.

Be careful of anyone giving you advice on anything, especially online sales. Be wary of people full of advice with little if any action. Don’t trust under-performers or those who have never achieved anything to give you advice, for you are a better source of information and you are better off following your gut; that is if you are a real entrepreneur.

Sending autoresponder messages is one of the most powerful email marketing strategy. The most important benefit of this technique, is that you can automate 95% of the process. Here are some autoresponder message sample ideas to help you write money-making email messages.

#1. Personalize Your Message

Personalized autoresponder messages are much more effective and have a higher conversion rate than other messages. That’s because your reader feels you’re talking directly to him, so he pays much more attention.

The most important places to mention their name is your subject line and first paragraph. You can also start the most important sentences of your message with their name to win their attention.

To send personalized autoresponder messages, you need to use an autoresponder service that offers this feature. A good autoresponder service lets you keep at least 10 personalized data fields for each of your customers.

I recommend you read the following article to discover some other important features the autoresponder you choose must have:

http://www.FreeNewsletterIdeas.com/customer-follow-up-system.htm

#2. Emphasize Benefits, Not Features

People are looking for benefits, not features. A feature is “what” your product provides, while a benefit explains how it “helps” people and makes their life easier.

If you explain how your product saves time, money, or energy, you’re giving a benefit… and that’s what makes your message sell!

#3. Write a Killer Subject Line

People first read the subject of your message and only if it’s interesting and makes them curious, they will open your message and read it. So it’s very important that you write an effective subject line, or people won’t open your message at all.

Wish you success!

If you have a link directory on a website, how do you stop link theft by sites that don’t link back, or trick you into thinking they do?

Whether link theft is anything to get concerned about depends on how many links your website has, the quality of those links (Google Page Rank) and how many of those links you lose. Search Engine Ranking is certainly something that’s becoming more dependent upon the links to your website.

You might be forgiven for thinking that when a website no longer links back to you, that it was an accident your link was removed from the link directory. Of course accidents happen as I know from using some link manager software. Just one click in the wrong box and a website link disappears the next time you update your link directory. But the real link thieves are those people that use methods to rob you of a link.

Here’s 7 Top Ways Link Thieves work and how you can avoid being their next victim.

1. If a website asks you to exchange links, don’t link to them until they have given you the URL location of your link in their link directory. If you link to them first they may forget to add your link.

2. Visually inspect your link by visiting the website page your link has been placed on. In your web browser, view the source code of the page. In Internet Explorer go to View then Source and this will open up your default text editor.

Using the text editor search on the page for your website domain and ensure when you find it that the link is a standard text link of the form :
a href=”http://www.yourdomain.com/” target=”_blank”>Link Title.

The target=”_blank” just launches a new browser window when the link is clicked. The link should have no JavaScript code like: onclick=”javascript:newWindow(’http://www.yourdomain.com’)”>Link Title.

Links like this JavaScript one can be made to look visually identical when viewed in a web page browser, but to a search engine it’s as if this link is not there. Whilst a visual inspection to catch this form of theft is always the best, you can catch some, but not all of these types of links by using reciprocal link manager checking software.

3. Check that your link on the other web sites page is not being put through a redirect. By hovering your mouse over the link, check what link text appears in the status bar of your web browser.

If your link appears as:
“http://www.theirdomain.com/page.html” or
“http://www.theirdomain.com/redirect.asp?id=2273″ and not
“http://www.yourdomain.com”
Then your link is on a redirect.

Any form of link that has theirdomain and not yourdomain in the link URL is only of benefit to the other site owner and not you. Links like this point to their domain and not yours which gives the other site the link benefit in the eyes of the search engines.

Don’t link to this site if you want some search engine benefit from the link.

If you just want traffic from visitors clicking on the link, that’s the only benefit you’ll get.

4. If you want to get search engine link benefit, don’t link to web sites that have dynamically generated link pages. If your link is on a dynamically generated link page the URL of that page could be something like :

The fact that the URL has a ? or & in the URL means that most search engines will never read that page, so they will never see the link back to your site.

5. Use the Google Toolbar Page Rank Tool to check the PR of the page your link is on.

If the PR is 0 but the PR of the home page is much better, this could mean either the link directory is new ( not likely if it has a lot of links ) or there could be something about the page which is preventing Google from reaching it.

Using your web browser view the page code as in 2 above and check for the robots meta tag at the top of the page between the and tags.

If it says :
meta name=”robots” content=”index,follow” or
meta name=”robots” content=”all”
then all is OK.

If the tag says :
meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,follow” or
meta name=”robots” content=”index,nofollow” or
meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,nofollow” or
meta name=”robots” content=”none”

Then this page is not being given full access to the search engines. Do not link to this sort of page.

6. If the robots meta tag you checked is OK but you still suspect a problem with a low PR then you should check the sites robots.txt file. To do this type the main URL of the site into a web browser but add robots.txt for example: “http://www.domainyourlinkingto.com/robots.txt”

The robots.txt file is read by the search engines and it tells it the directory and files it can access. A simple robots.txt file might look something like:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin
Disallow: /forms
Disallow: /contact.html

If the URL of the page you were linking to was: “http://www.domainyourlinkingto.com/dir/web-design.html”

Then you would want to be sure that in the robots.txt file you should NOT see:

Disallow: /dir
Disallow: /dir/web-design.html

This is telling the search engine robot not to index or follow the links in the link directory called dir and to ignore the links page web-design.html.

And you should not see :
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

If you see :
User-agent: *
Disallow:

Then that’s OK.

All sounds a bit complicated I know, but there is no easier way to explain this sort of thing. Some reciprocal link manager checking software will also detect the incorrect use of the meta robots tag and also check the robots text file.

However some link manager software I have experienced, incorrectly reported a link page as blocked by the robots text file because it read “Disallow:” as prohibiting the search engine when in fact it means allow (see above). It is “Disallow: /” that would tell the search engine not to index the site.

7. Once you’ve completed your link exchange and done the checks to ensure you’re not being cheated you must then check your links at regular intervals. Once you have more than about 50 links you will soon find link checking becomes a time consuming process. It’s far better to build your link directory using some form of link manager software that will automatically check your links at intervals you specify.

To help you in making the right choices about setting up a link directory read my article
“10 Mistakes to Avoid When Setting Up a Link Directory” which you can find at
http://www.webpageaddons.com/link-manager-mistakes.htm

Of course not all link theft is intentional, sometimes it’s just the webmaster not knowing that the way he has set up his link directory will not provide search engine link benefit to anyone that links to them.

However some link theft is intentional, the webmaster knows exactly what they are doing and by following this advice you can avoid being their next victim.
